Christiana Varda

Christiana Varda is the founder of Media What, a non-profit organisation focused on promoting media literacy through participatory media production activities that empower community voices and enhance critical thinking. She is also a PhD student and Research Associate at the Department of Communication and Internet Studies at the Cyprus University of Technology. Christiana is currently working on Co-Inform, a European-funded research project to create tools that will increase society’s resilience to online misinformation and generate more informed behaviours and policies. Her research interests include media literacy, misinformation and social media platforms. She’s also an Associate Lecturer at UCLan Cyprus, teaching creative Adobe technologies on the BSc Web Design and Web Development course. Christiana has diverse experience in education, media and digital technologies and has been a media educator for a decade.

Christiana graduated as a Schreyer Honors Scholar and holds a BA in Communications (Journalism) and a BA in English from Pennsylvania State University, where she studied on a full CASP / Fulbright scholarship. She also holds an MA in Interactive Multimedia from the Cyprus University of Technology, where she focused on educational technology.

Finally, she is passionate about nurturing film literacy; she is the Executive Secretary of the Board of the Larnaka Cinema Society, a volunteer-run, non-profit organisation, a position she has held since 2013
