Maria Papaefstathiou

Maria completed a PhD at the University of East Anglia in 2014 on the topic of children's rights in sport, focusing particularly on child-athlete welfare in the context of Cypriot athletics. She is the co-founder of Healthier Sport, an NGO working to create a cultural change in sport by providing education and awareness regarding athlete welfare and ethics. Simultaneously, she works as an independent qualitative researcher and as a consultant in the School Violence Intervention Team established by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus (MoEC). Her research uses qualitative methods to explore the areas of athlete welfare, gender-based violence in sport, child (athlete) agency and “disaffected” youth. She has been involved in a number of European Commission studies on sexualised violence and gender-based violence in sport. Since 2010, she has also been publishing research articles in these aforementioned areas.
