Yiota Afxentiou

Yiota Afxentiou is a Registered Counselling Psychologist with over 20 years’ experience supporting children and adolescents on a range of emotional and cognitive issues. Her holistic approach, which makes use of psychometric tests and other psychological tools, also includes parental counselling; Yiota guides parents to understand how their behaviour impacts their children, in other words, she focuses on understanding the family dynamics in order to work on children’s behaviour and symptoms. Yiota believes in a psychodynamic approach, having trained for a total of 11 years to become a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. She went on to specialise further in psychoanalytic psychotherapy for children and adolescents. Yiota has found this method to be the most effective in understanding family dynamics and synergies, as well as how these affect the children in the family. Yiota assesses children for learning difficulties and helps them on a wide variety of emotional and mental health issues, including phobias, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive behaviour and dealing with grief. Yiota is also a strong believer in political equality for all Cypriots, regardless of their ethnicity. Her passion to end conflict has led her to become a mediator for conflict resolution; she’s also an activist, working with civil society and promoting peace through a number of intercommunal projects.
